Basketball and DNA

I’m not quite sure how the whole genetics thing works.  (Jess probably could explain it.)  Some genes, I’m convinced must only surface every 3 or 4 generations.

The basketball gene must be among them.  My dad has no interest in sports.  I don’t think he has ever watched an entire basketball game in his life.  I’ve never had much interest in watching basketball or football either.  We never had a game on in the house as my children were growing up.

I do love cycling, mountain biking, hiking, snowshoeing, camping and motorcycling.  I have tried diligently to show my sons the beauty of these sports, but it falls on deaf ears.  Long ago I realized they would rather go to the dentist for a root canal than go mountain biking with dad.  Oh well.  I try to support them in their interests.

Ironically, both my boys LOVE basketball.  That is actually an understatement.  They are basketball fanatics!  First thing after school they check the NBA scores and highlights.  They  don’t miss a game and can quote all of the stats and know all the players.

Danny plays basketball for hours every day and never gets enough.  I can’t get them to shovel the driveway after it snows, but all on his own without being asked Danny shoveled the basketball court so he could play basketball.

Nathan likes Dwayne Wade.  He has a Dwayne Wade jersey that he wears over his shirt almost every day.  Nate is really good too.  Danny and I both team up to play against Nate but Nate beats us every time and makes it look easy.  Nate wouldn’t be caught dead outside of the house without his Nikes.  In fact, Nate was the only kid at ward trek last summer who had a Nike Swoosh logo carefully markered onto his pioneer shirt and hat.

Tonight the three of us are going to see the Utah Jazz vs. the Miami Heat at the Energy Solutions Arena.  Nate and Danny will get to see their favorite player live in action.  It was their main Christmas present this year.  Should be a very fun, memorable boys night out.

Grandpa Loveland and Grandpa Jensen both liked watching basketball.  Maybe the gene just skipped 3 generations!

  2. I knew Grandpa Loveland was an avid sports enthusiast but I had no idea about Grandpa Jensen!
